The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) and the National Police Commission (NHRC) have launched an investigation into the brutal assault by the Hambantota Port Police.
Weerasekera Kamkanamge Tharuka Lakshan, a married and father of two is a resident of Ballagaswewa, Hambantota, was assaulted by the police on a day of June. A resident of the same village had lodged a false complaint with the Hambantota Port Police against Tharuka who runs a garage to make a living. Tharuka had gone to the police on that day to face investigation regarding this complaint.
At that time, the complainant woman had shown this person to a sub-police officer and he had come to Tharuka and slapped on the face. Later victim has made to sit on a chair and hit in the head, face and body by officer’s hands and put the person in jail. The victim has assaulted by police officers at that night and also the day following.
Tharuka had lodged a complaint regarding the incident with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka and the IGP, the National Police Commission, the Hambantota District First Aid Center at the Right to Life Human Rights Center. Accordingly, the National Police Commission and the Human Rights Commission have launched an investigation into the matter.
